It has been a tough decision to make by the management committee but we hope everyone will understand why. As with most things, it all boils down to time, costs and sustainability. Please read the full press release here:

The other community events planned for this year by Budleigh Food and Drink - Bier Wurst and Bands on 13 October 2018 (Oktoberfest theme) and The Winter Feast in conjunction with the Lions Club on the 10th November, will still be going ahead as stand-alone events and The Budleigh Food and Drink group will continue to look at ways to hold other community events in the future.

Budleigh Local Food Festival a resounding success

11/4/2017

Once again the Budleigh Local Food Festival was a resounding success. This is the third time the event has been held and it has become a much anticipated fixture in the town’s summer calendar. A fantastic fun foodie family weekend was had by all!

Building on the popularity of previous years and blessed with glorious summer weather - so early on - the event was a true community celebration of local food & drink producers and small businesses. The festival, organised by a local group of volunteers, headed up by Trudie Burne, aims to showcase the best of East Devon and of course the town of Budleigh Salterton.

From the opening of the festival at 10am the site was filled with crowds of Budleigh locals and visitors, keen to sample the wide array of treats on offer. More than 7000 people came out to join in the fun across the weekend! The crowds were spoilt for choice with mouth watering hot and cold foods on offer from the many local businesses. Street food stalls offered delicious fresh local produce, with a wide variety of wonderful dishes.

The festival also provided an ideal opportunity for visitors to stock up on locally produced cheeses, breads, cakes, vegetables and more. Shops on the High Street joined in to tempt the crowds with their special treats and offers, and of course the Tray Bake Trail had people going from cafe to shop sampling the cakes. The public vote winner of the trail was Fifty Degrees North Cafe on the sea front!

Children and families were well catered for with a range of craft activities, workshops and fabulous entertainment including the wonderful story telling by Clive Pig and Nutty Noah, who had even the dads crying with laughter. The kid's craft this year also featured mural artwork which will go on display in town as part of the BUDFAS Budding Creatives project, linking to this year’s book which will be published ready for the summer season, having been worked on by the local schools. A very popular addition to this year’s event was the Budleigh Carnival Club’s stand which gave everyone a chance to have fun with a human fruit machine! The organisers were delighted with the weekend’s success.

Live music was a big feature throughout the weekend with an acoustic stage in the Food & Drink market area and live music from 3pm in the marquee on the Green. The festival was proud to be supporting local up and coming talent with students from the Exeter Academy of Music and Sound performing, as well as many other acts including the delightful Jessica Rhodes who had crowds on the Green dancing in the afternoon sunlight!

Festival Manager Trudie Burne said: "The festival has become a true community event and a valuable showcase for local produce and small businesses. Its growing popularity shows a real public appetite for local and sustainable food and drink, and the free entertainment during the daytime is enjoyed by all generations. We are very proud to be a true festival for all ages, run by the community for the community."

During the weekend there were various competition and grand challenges held; the children enjoyed the Great Budleigh Bake Off Junior at the Methodist Hall, led by Zac Laverick from Otterton Mill and Sue Stoneman South West Home Cook of the year 2016.  The prizes for the best bread went to Hannah Ralph from St Peter’s School in Budleigh with a mouth-watering entry, second prize went to Tom Pepperell and third to Olivia Stoner, a baker’s dozen entered the competition and the effort and enthusiasm from these junior bakers was terrific, it really was a very hard competition to judge.  Hopefully the bakers will keep their new found skills and continue enjoying baking in their own homes from now on.
The ever popular food demos in the Public Hall were held over the two days featuring a long list of local chefs. Recipes and tips were shared during the question and answer sessions and of course lots of tasty morsels were tried as the cooked dishes were divided up for the audience to try too!

Our very own Budleigh Master Chef competition final featured two excellent home cooks. A nerve wracking 30 minutes of cooking then the judging saw Helen Griffin crowned the first ever Budleigh Master Chef with her winning dish of mussels and pan fried cod in a saffron sauce. Well done to Tom Garner who came second with his fabulous dish of local venison - it was a very close run competition. The audience really got behind the competitors and there was a very tense competitive feel to the event, but the contestants really came into their own and concentrated on producing their dishes. Helen’s elderly father had jumped straight on a plane to travel down from Mirfield Yorkshire just to see her in the final! He was delighted with her win!

The Afters Party concert Saturday evening was a sell out, with a fabulous atmosphere, amazing line up of musicians and a real summer party feel. The music line up was Vince Freeman, Wildwood Kin and Bloc off the Wall. The evening ended on a huge high, another fabulous addition to the food festival weekend programme!

Executive Chef Willi Rehbock and Trudie Burne Festival Director, said: “After two years of planning, it was fantastic to see so many of the area’s micro businesses join together to ensure the weekend was the success it deserved to be. The good weather meant many of our visitors were able to explore the whole of Budleigh in between enjoying the many events we organised. Our aim was to draw people into the area at a time when things can be quieter, to really show them everything we have to offer here in Budleigh and in East Devon. We cannot believe how many people came along!”
Festival visitors came from just down the road and from far and wide. The sun shone all weekend and the smiles on people’s faces were testament to the ethos, passion, quality and dedication behind the event, built up over the past 4 years by the festival team. Is it time to start planning for another one? Maybe after the team have had a well deserved rest!

The organisers would like to thank the hard working volunteers, stall holders, sponsors and supporters, but most of all the public who helped make the weekend be such a great success. More photos will be available on the festival website and Facebook page over the coming days and weeks.

Budleigh Salterton Dental Practice is a small and friendly private practice which has been established since 1960. We offer a warm welcome to all our patients and hope to make your visit as comfortable and relaxed as possible. “We pride ourselves on offering the very best clinical standards. When restoring teeth we aim to create a result that enhances the appearance
of your smile and feeling of well-being.”
Dr Thomas Olivelle

Your smile
Having a confident, natural smile is one of your greatest assets. Unfortunately, many people do not have the confidence to smile due to the appearance of their teeth and this in turn affects their
self-esteem and the way that they are perceived by others. With the treatments that are available at Budleigh Salterton Dental Practice, it is possible to make a real difference to your smile.

Treatments
All types of dental treatment are undertaken by our team of Clinicians. They are all registered with the General Dental Council and have exceptional clinical standards.  They regularly attend courses to keep themselves up to date with new techniques and materials.  Treatments offered at Budleigh Salterton Dental Practice include all forms of general dentistry, dental implants and various
dental-cosmetic treatment. We aim to make your time in the chair as relaxed and comfortable as possible and all our surgeries are bright and modern.  We can even offer DVD viewing from the dental chair in some of the surgeries!

Technology
Advances in dentistry and new techniques have made it possible to restore your teeth and gums even if they have been neglected or damaged and Budleigh Salterton Dental Practice prides itself on offering exceptional standards of treatment. When restoring teeth, we aim to create a result that not only enhances your smile but will also improve other factors such as function and speech, giving you the confidence to eat, talk and smile naturally.  The practice has recently invested in the very latest technology of a ‘Cerec’ machine.  This technology enables you to have a tailor made crown in one visit, without the need to take traditional tray impressions.  The digital technology means that the crown will be produced extremely accurately and will fit perfectly.  You can
even watch your new tooth being milled!

Nervous patients
We offer a choice of sedation options to those patients who have a fear of the dentist and treatment. Please discuss your concerns with us and we will be able to recommend the most suitable option for you. We aim to make your visit as relaxed as possible… it really does not have to be an unpleasant experience these days.

Where we are
The practice is just opposite the Green in Budleigh Salterton near the Public Hall where the main bus stops are, just 100yds away. There is a free public car park opposite and some available parking outside. The beautiful pebble beach is only a short walk away – come and make a day of it!

SPOTLIGHT ON OUR SPONSORS No1. Sandra Joyce Homeopathy

14/3/2016

Picture
Homeopathy is a long-established and complete system of medicine, recognised by the World Health Organisation as the second most used form of medicine around the world today. In the UK alone between six and eleven million people use it regularly as their medicine of choice. It is based on a set of consistent principles, the holistic observation of each patient as an individual person, and the use of (mainly) natural substances as remedies.

Homeopathy can (and does) address anything you might take to a GP or specialist, and much that you wouldn’t. This holds true for male or female, and at every age and stage of life and development, including the new-born, the pregnant, and the elderly. Treatment can be focussed on a single therapeutic need, such as a short-term acute complaint; or applied to a broader, deeper, more layered case, as in chronic conditions or ailments, general lack of well-being or ‘dis-ease’.

Given the dismantling of the NHS that is now underway, and the increasing pressure on the UK’s remaining medical system, the smart money in the very near future will be on caring for our health and well-being in a variety of ways. Trying alternatives not available in mainstream medicine enables us to create individualised systems of good healthcare, appropriate to and effective for much of our health and well-being needs. To this end, homeopathic medicine is simply one of the best alternative or complementary health resources available.

Sandra trained and qualified at one of the best schools of homeopathy in Britain, and is registered with the Society of Homeopaths and the Professional Standards Authority. Her practice covers half of East Devon and all of Exeter (postcodes EX1-EX6 and EX8 to EX11), where you can consult with Sandra either in the convenience and familiarity of your own home, or at one of her regular clinics in Exmouth, Exeter and Sidmouth.

To find out whether homeopathy and this practitioner would be appropriate and beneficial for your case or that of someone in your care, you can contact me in whichever way suits. Alternatively you can book a fifteen minute, free of charge, ‘Meet the Practitioner’ slot at my regular Wednesday morning Exmouth clinic.

The BBQ Brothers are coming to Beer Bangers and Bands!

'The BBQ Brothers' The Boys From Good Game will be in the kitchen!

The Beer Bangers and Bands event on Saturday 16th April at the Public Hall in Budleigh, brings you great music, locally produced drinks and for the ‘BBQ Brothers’ from Good Game in the kitchen, it's all about the bangers!

Proceeds from the event will go toward the funding needed to host the next Budleigh Food and Drink Festival in 2017 and ‘keeping it local’ was the key ingredient for the festival organisers when looking for someone to provide food for the event. Good Game, based in Topsham, have been making sausages and cured meats for a number of years and are true artisans, using very traditional styles to produce their award winning sausages. Owners Steve Williams and Pete say “A quality sausage needs to have a high meat content but does benefit from containing a small amount of oats to keep the fat in as it cooks.” Steve and Pete are really pleased to be supporting the Beer Bangers and Bands event and will be cooking up a selection of sausages to buy from the kitchen during the evening. “We make tasty cooking sausages from game and exciting pork sausage like Chorizo, Black Pudding and Spicy Italian and we are in discussions about making a banger especially for the event!”.

Good Game supports local producers. They have their own pigs at Powderham and also buy from friends who have native breed pigs locally. Their game is either shot by themselves or by local Devon folk they know. They buy sundries and kit from MK in Devon who are a local family business and where possible get spices from one of the Devon producers or a small specialist importer who has direct contact with growers and can ensure quality levels.
It's this buy local ethos that makes them such a good choice for the Budleigh Food and Drink Festival fundraiser.

Good Game have recently opened a BBQ restaurant The Pig and Pallet in Topsham where all of it’s fine produce are available to eat on site or even to take away and cook at home… If you want to know what you are eating, and you should, Good Game is the choice!

Tickets are now available from the on-line box office via the festival website and are selling fast! www.budleighfoodanddrink.org.uk Tickets are limited so don’t miss out, go get yours now! [Vege supper option will also be available at the event]
